Math Homework Activities for Ms. Weisenbergers Class

Math Homework Activity Choices-
First Grade Magnet
3rd Nine Weeks/2011-2012
*DO THESE ACTIVITIES IN STUDENT”S HOMEWORK JOURNAL*
[Ms. Adams students may use these activities as enrichment]
Learning Objectives:

*Place Value to 50-
1) Have children make T-charts using numbers 1-99 (students will draw blocks to represent 1’s and column’s to represent the 10’s… they know how to do this!)-
(3 items per night)
2) Order numbers in order to least to greatest and visa versa (0-99)
Example-
35, 17, 28… the correct order would be 17, 28, 35 for least to great and 35, 28, 17 for greatest to least-
(Students should do 5 combinations of numbers per night)
3) Students may also practice writing the expanded form of a number 1-99
Example-
87… 80+7


*Using Patterns & Strategies to Solve Addition & Subtraction Facts to 10
Have students make fact family houses at home (they know how to do this!)-
Example-
(2, 3, 5)
2+3=5
3+2=5
5-2=3
5-3=2
(2 items per night)

*Counting Coins
Have students make combinations with coins.
Example-
Play store… mark a pack of cheese crackers in your pantry 35 cents then have the student give you that amount using pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters- draw them on journal paper
(3 items per night)

*Weight and Mass
Have students compare and order 2+ objects according to their weight and mass (heaviest to lightest & visa versa).
Do 3 combinations per night!

*Time and Temperature
Have students make a clock out of a paper plate. Write the hours where they belong. Add the minute and hour hand (make 2 arrows) where they belong. You can use a brass brad to attach them. Have students practice placing the minute hand and hour hand on times to the hour and half hour. Finally, have students write the time using words and digital numbers. Please record that they have done this with you in their journal. (They should complete 5 times a night)

*Collecting and Organizing Data
Go to the Internet and download a student activity for pictographs or bar graphs- 1st grade. Then have your child complete it and turn it in to me the next day.
