Math Choices (Weisenberger)

Math Homework Activity Choices- (Mrs. Adams class is welcomed to work on these activities as well!
First Grade Magnet
2nd Nine Weeks/2011-2012
*DO THESE ACTIVITIES IN STUDENT”S HOMEWORK JOURNAL*


Learning Objectives:

*Length-
Measure things in your home and outside using nonstandard units such as paper clips (5 items per night)
Example-
The length of a cereal box would be approximately 12 paper clips long

*Place Value to 50-
1) Have children make T-charts using numbers 1-50 (students will draw blocks to represent 1’s and column’s to represent the 10’s… they know how to do this!)-
3 items per night
2) Order numbers 1-50 in order to least to greatest and visa versa
Example-
35, 17, 28… the correct order would be 17, 28, 35 for least to great and 35, 28, 17 for greatest to least-
Students should do 5 combinations of numbers per night
3) Students may also practice writing the expanded form of a number 1-50
Example-
43… 40+3

*Two- and Three- Dimensional Figures
(spheres, rectangular Prisms (including cubes), cylinders and cones)-
Have students find figures in your home then have them write how many faces it has and vertices (corners)
Example-
Cube= 6 faces/8 vertices
3 items per night

*Using Patterns & Strategies to Solve Addition & Subtraction Facts to 10
Have students make fact family houses at home (they know how to do this!)-
Example-
(2, 3, 5)
2+3=5
3+2=5
5-2=3
5-3=2
2 items per night

*Counting Coins
Have students make combinations with coins.
Example-
Play store… mark a pack of cheese crackers in your pantry 35 cents then have the student give you that amount using pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters- draw them on journal paper
3 items per night
