April 9-13, 2012
This week in science class the students will begin Chapter 2, How we use Trees. Monday the class will add a long needle pine tree to their journal also known as an evergreen tree. Tuesday the class topic is natural resources. Thursday and Friday the class will complete a paper recycling project.

First Grade
April 2-5, 2012
This week in science class the students will complete Chapter 1, What is a Tree, and have a Test on Tuesday. Monday the class will review the Chapter and count tree rings to find the age of the tree when it was cut down. Tuesday the class will complete the TEST. Thursday the class will go over the Test results. Sorry for the late post, we had a power outage yesterday.

Math Choices (Weisenberger)
Math Homework Activity Choices- (Mrs. Adams class is welcomed to work on these activities as well!

2nd Nine Weeks/2011-2012
*DO THESE ACTIVITIES IN STUDENT”S HOMEWORK JOURNAL*
Learning Objectives:
*Length-
Measure things in your home and outside using nonstandard units such as paper clips (5 items per night)
Example-
The length of a cereal box would be approximately 12 paper clips long
*Place Value to 50-
1) Have children make T-charts using numbers 1-50 (students will draw blocks to represent 1’s and column’s to represent the 10’s… they know how to do this!)-
3 items per night
2) Order numbers 1-50 in order to least to greatest and visa versa
Example-
35, 17, 28… the correct order would be 17, 28, 35 for least to great and 35, 28, 17 for greatest to least-
Students should do 5 combinations of numbers per night
3) Students may also practice writing the expanded form of a number 1-50
Example-
43… 40+3
*Two- and Three- Dimensional Figures
(spheres, rectangular Prisms (including cubes), cylinders and cones)-
Have students find figures in your home then have them write how many faces it has and vertices (corners)
Example-
Cube= 6 faces/8 vertices

*Using Patterns & Strategies to Solve Addition & Subtraction Facts to 10
Have students make fact family houses at home (they know how to do this!)-
Example-
(2, 3, 5)
2+3=5
3+2=5
5-2=3
5-3=2
2 items per night
*Counting Coins
Have students make combinations with coins.
Example-
Play store… mark a pack of cheese crackers in your pantry 35 cents then have the student give you that amount using pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters- draw them on journal paper

Zoo Field Trip
Dear Parents,
Our next field trip will be to the Houston Zoo!!!

Thursday, March 29th (8:30-2:00)
· How?
All students will ride the bus & parents will meet us at the zoo’s front gate
***Parents I must have your name this week if you plan to attend. You must be approved by the VIPS program with HISD.
If you plan to attend, put your name here & return to me asap_____________________________________.
Also, your child will need a bag lunch (one that can be thrown away)!

Tuesday the class will read about the needs of living things pages 10-15. Thursday the class will add another tree to their journal. Friday the class will read and discuss the life cycle of apple trees (seed, seedling, adult tree, and growth of seeds in fruit). The next tree the class will to their tree Journals is the orange tree.
Test on Chapter 1 next week.

Please join us for a “Math Activity Night” on Wednesday, March 21st (4:30-5:30)!
We will meet in the library where you will “make & take” math activities that will aid your children in learning at home.
